After looking at our raw CAN frames, we concluded that we were transmitting a MESSAGE_ID. Based on the SAE J1939 standard, MESSAGE_IDs are only used with the creation of a CAN frame. Therefore, all the raw CAN frames that we had will have a MESSAGE_ID that starts with f in the first position. Our first attempt at parsing the raw CAN frames by dbcreader.py was shown below.
Sae J1939 is a version of standard CAN protocol published by the SAE. The standard specifies a synchronous message format that can deliver up to 16 bytes of data in a standard CAN frame. The frame is transmitted every 8 microseconds. External master controller and receiver devices play a role to schedule the transmission of the frames. In this document, we are going to provide recommendations to successfully receive Sae J1939 data.
Communication with the CAN bus is achieved through the CAN protocols. A CAN open-collector/CANHAL interface is required to receive/transmit CAN messages on the CAN bus. Here we are going to provide a reference to the concrete CAN interface and CAN device available for common CAN transceiver/controller development boards. Before connecting to a CAN bus, the CAN device must be configured to support Sae J1939 standard as described above. 7211a4ac4a
